Cannabis Club Etiquette in South Africa

So, you're coming to South Africa and want to check out the cannabis clubs. Good call. The scene here is growing, but it's built around private clubs, so it helps to know how things work before you walk in.
Think of it like you're going over to a friend's house. These places are all about respect, community, and good times. Here’s how you can walk into any club and fit right in.
What’s the Deal with the Law and How Clubs Work
Before you do anything, let's get the legal stuff straight. Back in 2018, our top court decriminalised private cannabis use for adults. Then in May 2024, the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act was signed. This just means you, as an adult, can enjoy your own cannabis in a private place.
What you can't do is buy or sell it like you would a beer. Smoking in public is out, and obviously, driving high is a huge no. Cannabis clubs get around this by being private spaces. You can legally hang out and enjoy cannabis inside. They are not shops. Let me repeat that, you can't buy cannabis there. You go to socialize and consume what you’ve already got. The rules change, so it's always smart to check the latest before you travel.
The Basics: How Not to Be a Jerk
Most of this is common sense you’d use anywhere, but it’s worth a reminder.
- Respect Everyone: This is number one. People are there to chill. Keep your voice down, give people their space, and just be a decent human.
- Consent is Everything: This goes for starting a conversation or sharing a joint. Make sure the other person is cool with it. Always.
- Clean Up Your Mess: Don't leave your ash, old joints, or wrappers lying around. Use the ashtrays and bins. The staff and the next person will thank you.
- Be Nice to the Staff: These folks keep the place running smoothly so you can relax. A little courtesy and appreciation go a long way.
Cannabis Etiquette: How to Share and Smoke
The whole point of these clubs is community. Here’s how to be a welcome part of it.
- Contribute to the Circle: It's not a good look to always be taking and never giving. If you just ran out, it's fine to ask. But don't make it a habit.
- Offer to Share: Got some of your own? The best way to make friends is to offer a hit. If someone shared with you, it's good form to return the favour later.
- Pass It On: The old tradition is "pass to the left," but just see what the group is doing. Just pass it to the next person.
- Don't Be a Storyteller: Take a puff, maybe two, and pass it. No one wants to watch the joint burn away while you're telling a long story.
- Puff, Puff, Pass: It’s a classic for a reason. Two hits, then move it along. Keeps things flowing.
- Ash Properly: Use an ashtray. Simple. Don't be the person ashing on the floor or in a pot plant.
- Hands Off: Never, ever just grab from someone else's personal stash. Ask first. Always.
- Mind the Smell: Yes, it's a cannabis club, but some people are more sensitive than others. Just be aware of your surroundings, especially in smaller rooms.
Finding Your Spot: Zazapass Partner Clubs
Some of the best private clubs in the country have partnered with Zazapass. These places have great setups, so knowing what's on offer helps.
For instance, in Cape Town you’ve got The Alibi Cape Town in the city centre on Bree Street. It’s a cool multi level spot with private lounges, places to work, and a full kitchen. Over in Sea Point, there's Nirvana Cafe Sea Point. It's another huge place with lounges, workspaces, meeting rooms, a library, cafe, pool tables, and Wi Fi. Its sister spot, Nirvana Cafe Blouberg in Table View, has a similar setup with a great beachside feel.
If you find yourself in Johannesburg, check out Budrock Cafe. It’s another solid choice for a private place to chill.
When you're at one of these clubs:
- Workspaces: If you're using a desk or a meeting room, keep the noise to a minimum. People are trying to get stuff done.
- Lounges: These are for chilling. Enjoy your conversation, just don't make the whole room have to enjoy it too.
- Kitchens and Cafes: Follow the house rules for ordering. Pretty straightforward.
- Pool Tables and Books: Use the fun stuff, but put it back where you found it, how you found it.
- Your ID: These are strictly for adults 21 and over. They will check your ID, so have it ready.
To get into these places and avoid paying the entry fee each time, you can buy a one year entry pass from Zazapass. It covers your entry for a full year and can make getting in much faster. Once you buy the pass, your Zazapass account will show you the club's exact address. You can look at all available passes here, or browse all the clubs and see their locations on a map.
We don't have a Zazapass partner club in Pretoria just yet. But Johannesburg is only about 60km away, and new places are always popping up. Keep an eye on the Zazapass site, especially the city pages and other guides, for any updates.
Your Pre-Game Checklist
- Bring Your ID: You won't get in without it. Clubs are 21+.
- Have Your Pass: If you have a Zazapass entry pass, have it open on your phone.
- Know the Rules: Remember, the entry pass is just for entry. You can't buy cannabis there. Bring your own.
- Prepare for Munchies: Most clubs have food, but it never hurts to be ready.
- Plan Your Ride: Figure out how you're getting home. Never, ever drive impaired.
Follow this advice, and you’ll do more than just have a good time. You’ll be part of what makes our cannabis scene great. Enjoy it.
