Cape Town Neighbourhoods for Cannabis Travellers

A Capetonian's Guide to Cannabis Friendly Neighbourhoods

So, you're planning a trip to Cape Town and want to know about the cannabis scene. Good call. Our laws are a bit different here. Since a big court decision in 2018 and the new Cannabis for Private Purposes Act in May 2024, adults can use, have, and grow cannabis privately. Selling it is still a no go, and you absolutely can't smoke in public or drive while impaired. That's where private clubs come in, giving you a legal, responsible spot to chill. Just remember, laws can shift, so it's always smart to double check what's current.

Cape Town has a bunch of different neighbourhoods, each with its own personality. For you, some are better than others, mostly because they have private clubs that work within our laws. Let's look at the main spots.

Cape Town CBD: The Bree Street Area

The CBD, our city centre, is exactly what you'd expect. It's busy, packed with old buildings, and gets loud at night. Bree Street in particular is the centre of cool, full of great places to eat and unique shops. You should stay here if you want to be right in the middle of everything. You can easily get to the Table Mountain cableway, the V&A Waterfront, and most of the museums.

This is where you'll find The Alibi Cape Town, one of the Zazapass partner clubs. It's a discreet, multi level spot that feels a world away from the street outside. You can relax in their private lounges or, if you must, get some work done in their creative spaces. They even have a full kitchen, so you don't have to step out for food. It’s a solid choice if you value your privacy and like things a bit more polished.

Getting around the CBD is simple. You can walk almost everywhere or grab a quick ride. Having a private club right in the city centre makes things very convenient.

Sea Point: Coastal Life and Relaxation

Hop in a car or on a bus from the CBD and you'll hit Sea Point. This neighbourhood's main feature is the promenade, a long walkway right next to the Atlantic. People are always walking, running, or just sitting and watching the ocean. The mood is energetic but definitely more relaxed than the city centre, with tons of restaurants and cafes serving locals and tourists alike. It's the spot for you if you want to be near the water in a place that's still buzzing.

In Sea Point, you've got Nirvana Cafe Sea Point, another Zazapass partner club. It's a big place set up for pretty much anything. You’ve got your private lounges for relaxing, but also workspaces, meeting rooms, and even a library. Need a distraction? There are pool tables. Hungry? They have a kitchen and cafe. You can step out onto one of the terraces for some sea air, and the free Wi-Fi keeps you connected. It really covers all the bases, whether you're there to hang out, work, or just unwind in private.

Sea Point is a good launchpad for exploring the beaches at Clifton and Camps Bay or heading back into the city. That mix of being by the water with a do it all private club nearby makes it a top pick.

Table View and Blouberg: That Famous View and Beach Town Charm

Head a bit further up the coast and you'll find the Table View and Blouberg areas. This is where you come for *that* picture of Table Mountain across the bay. You know the one. The view is seriously incredible, especially at sunset. The beaches here are huge and windy, so it's a major spot for kite surfing and other water sports. The feel is more suburban and chilled out than Sea Point or the CBD.

Here you'll find Nirvana Cafe Blouberg. This is the sister club to the one in Sea Point, and it offers all the same great facilities. You can expect private lounges for your own space, workspaces, and a cafe. The big difference is the location. You're right by the open ocean with that killer mountain view. If you want to get away from the main city buzz and just relax with amazing scenery, Blouberg is your spot. It’s perfect for enjoying yourself in a quiet, private place.

It's a little further out from the city, but you can still get around with public transport or ride sharing services. Blouberg works well if you plan on exploring the West Coast or just want to wake up to that magnificent view every morning.

Pretoria and Johannesburg: Beyond Cape Town

Okay, this is a Cape Town guide, but a quick note if you're travelling further inland. Zazapass doesn't have a partner in Pretoria right now. But Johannesburg, which is only about 60 km away, has Budrock Cafe, another Zazapass partner. So you do have an option if you head up to Gauteng. Keep an eye out, as more clubs might join the network in other cities.

How to Use the Private Clubs with Zazapass

So how do you get into these places? A Zazapass is a straightforward way. It's a one year entry pass for their partner clubs. The main reason to get one is that it saves you the club's entry fee every time you visit, for a whole year. You also get in quicker, which is nice. An entry pass for any of the South African clubs costs EUR 15 for the year. Just be sure you're 21 or older and have your ID.

It's important to get how this works legally. The clubs are private. That's the key. They follow the law allowing private adult use. Your Zazapass gets you through the door. I have to be super clear about this. The pass is for entry only. It does not mean you can buy cannabis with it. Again, always check the current legal situation. Once you get your entry pass, the club's exact address will show up in your Zazapass account.

Feel free to look up all available passes, check out all the clubs, see them on a map, or look at specific city pages. We've got other guides too if you need more travel ideas.

Making Your Choice

So, where should you stay? It really just depends on what you're after. Want the city energy and a more polished vibe? Go for the CBD and Bree Street. Prefer a mix of beach life and lots to do? Sea Point is a great bet. And if you're all about that incredible mountain view, a laid back coast, and water sports, then Table View or Blouberg is the place for you.

Whichever you pick, you'll have a good time in Cape Town. Just be sure you get how the laws and the private clubs work before you go.

FAQ

What is a Zazapass and how does it work?

A Zazapass is an entry pass that's good for one year at all Zazapass partner clubs. It lets you skip paying the club's entry fee every time you go, and gets you in faster. Your pass only covers entry to the private club. It is not for getting cannabis.

Are there Zazapass clubs outside of Cape Town?

Yes. Cape Town has a few, but Zazapass also has a partner club in Johannesburg called Budrock Cafe. They might add partners in other cities like Pretoria down the line, so check their website for anything new.

What are the legal requirements for entry to Zazapass partner clubs?

You have to be 21 or older with a valid ID. No exceptions. The clubs are private places that operate legally under South Africa's rules for private cannabis use by adults.
