Dagga: The South African Word for Cannabis

So you’re in South Africa. You're going to hear people talk about 'dagga'. It’s not some new street slang. It’s just what we call cannabis. Everyone here knows the word.
So what’s the story behind it, and what do you need to know? Let me fill you in.
Dagga: A Quick History and What It Means
The word ‘dagga’ has been around forever. It comes from the Khoisan languages of the first people here. For centuries, long before colonists arrived, locals used dagga for medicine and in ceremonies. It's a huge part of our history.
And today, it’s simple. When you hear someone say dagga, they just mean cannabis. It’s the standard word for it everywhere in South Africa.
Cannabis and the Law in South Africa
Compared to a lot of places, South Africa has a pretty modern take on cannabis. It wasn't always this way. Some big legal shifts have completely changed the game.
Things changed in a big way in 2018. The Constitutional Court made a huge call, the 'Prince case', that decriminalized using, having, and growing your own cannabis at home, for adults. It was all about the right to privacy.
Then in May 2024, the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act was signed into law, which made the rules even clearer.
Here's the main thing you need to get. Private use is okay. Selling it is not. You can’t smoke it in public, and you definitely can't drive after using it. It's a lot like booze. You can have a drink at home, but you can’t just sell it from your front door or walk down the street drinking. And you certainly can't drink and drive.
Laws can change, so this is just a friendly guide, not official legal advice. It’s always good to double check the current situation.
Checking Out South Africa's Cannabis Club Scene
Because you can’t just buy or sell dagga, a cool scene has popped up: private cannabis clubs. Think of them like a social club for anything else, a private spot for people with a shared interest. They’re safe, legal places where adults can hang out and enjoy cannabis together.
Let’s be clear, you don’t go to these clubs to buy weed. They are places for the community. You can meet people and enjoy the social atmosphere. It's all about the good company, not shopping.
This is where Zazapass comes in. It’s your key to getting into some of the best cannabis clubs in the country. A single Zazapass is a one-year entry pass that saves you the club's entry fee every single time you go for a whole year. You also usually get to go in faster.
You have to be 21 or older with a valid ID to get into any club. Each one-year entry pass costs EUR 15.

I need to say this again. Your Zazapass entry pass does not let you buy cannabis. The pass just covers your entry fee to the private club. Once you're inside, you can use the facilities and hang out with people, all within the country's laws. These clubs are for socializing, not for selling.
