Medical Cannabis in Munich: Treatment, Pharmacies & Delivery*

Medical Cannabis in Munich: Medical Treatment, Not Recreational Use
Munich and cannabis have a complicated relationship. Since the new law came into force, Bavaria applies particularly strict rules to recreational use. The medical route is separate from that: it requires medical treatment and is not an alternative to recreational use. Here's how treatment works in Munich and how pickup or delivery* works.
*Important: A prescription is not guaranteed. It can only be issued after medical treatment and once all criteria are met. Whether that is the case is decided solely by the treating doctor. Fast pickup or delivery is only possible with a valid prescription.
Germany's Cannabis Act and Bavaria's Tough Stance
Germany's Cannabis Act (CanG) came into force on 1 April 2024. In theory, this means adults aged 18 and over can possess small amounts of cannabis and grow it at home. Since July 2024, cultivation associations (Cannabis Social Clubs) have also been allowed to distribute seeds and cuttings, followed later by cannabis, to their members. But this is Bavaria, and the state applies the law in a particularly restrictive way.
What does that mean for you in Munich?
- No-consumption zones: Bavaria has expanded the areas where consumption is banned, for example beer gardens, fairs and certain parks such as the English Garden. Check with the City of Munich in advance which areas apply. Smoking a joint outdoors can quickly land you with a fine.
- Strict enforcement: Bavaria has announced that it will enforce the new rules strictly.
- Obstacles for cultivation associations: Setting up Cannabis Social Clubs is subject to requirements. Only people resident in Germany can become members.
In short, for tourists there is no access to cultivation associations under the recreational-use law in Munich, and strict rules apply to recreational use.
Medical vs Recreational Cannabis: Two Separate Systems
Medical cannabis is not a way around the rules for recreational use. The key difference is its status: it is a prescribed medicine that is only prescribed after medical treatment and once all criteria are met.
That means:
- Proof: With a valid prescription, you can show during a check that your possession is medically prescribed, as long as you follow your doctor's instructions.
- Quality control: Medical cannabis dispensed by a pharmacy is subject to strict checks. The strain and its THC and CBD content are stated.
- Consumption: Even as a patient, you should be discreet and observe the rules and no-consumption zones that apply. Medical use is not a free pass to consume anywhere.
- Supply: You follow the official route through a doctor and pharmacy. A prescription is not guaranteed.
How to Get a Medical Cannabis Prescription in Munich
A cannabis prescription is never a given. Since 2017, doctors in Germany have been able to prescribe cannabis flower, extracts and ready-made medicines where they consider it appropriate in the individual case. You must be an adult and bring identification.
1. Find the Right Doctor
You can, of course, ask your GP. Some are open to it, while others take a more conservative approach, especially in Bavaria. If they say no, do not be discouraged. Doctors specialising in cannabis treatment and telemedicine platforms are good alternatives. These doctors have experience with cannabis-based treatment, and the process is often much simpler and more discreet. There is no need to go from one surgery to another.
2. The Consultation and Medical History
The doctor will discuss your symptoms with you. What matters is whether the doctor considers a prescription appropriate in your individual case. Depending on the case, cannabis is considered for things like chronic pain, migraines or sleep disorders. There is no entitlement. The doctor will assess whether other treatments have failed to help or caused excessive side effects. Be honest and explain your circumstances clearly. The aim is to work together to find a solution to your health problems.
3. Get Your Prescription
If, after treatment, the doctor considers a prescription appropriate and all criteria are met, a prescription can be issued. A prescription is not guaranteed. This is usually a private prescription to begin with, meaning you pay for the cannabis at the pharmacy yourself. Health insurance may cover the cost, but securing approval is a lengthy and difficult process, usually reserved for very severe cases. For most people, paying out of pocket is the realistic route.
ZazaXpress: Medical Treatment, Pickup or Delivery*
One way to attend medical treatment from home is through an online platform. One option is our partner ZazaXpress.
At zazaxpress.com, a large part of the process takes place online.
Here's how it works:
- Online enquiry: You start by completing a medical questionnaire. It only takes a few minutes. Your treatment request is usually processed within 15 to 60 minutes*.
- Video call (voluntary): A video call with a doctor licensed to practise in Germany is voluntary. After treatment, the doctor decides whether cannabis therapy is suitable for you.
- Prescription (not guaranteed): If, after treatment, the doctor prescribes cannabis, the prescription is securely sent online to the pharmacy.
- Pickup or delivery*: With a valid prescription, the medicine is ready for pickup at the pharmacy* or can be delivered*, in Munich currently by DHL shipping (so the medicine can be pre-ordered*). Delivery is in plain packaging. Processing time, availability and delivery time depend on location and pharmacy.
This can make it easier to find a doctor and a pharmacy in Munich. ZazaXpress offers express pickup and delivery* in Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, Cologne, Osnabrück, Dortmund, Augsburg and Leipzig; for Munich the service is coming soon. Until then, the medicine is shipped by DHL with a valid prescription, so it can be pre-ordered*. How long shipping takes depends on the individual case.
Medical patients can request a prescription on zazaxpress.com and use the code ZAZA to save 50% on the platform fee.
*Applies only with a valid prescription. A prescription is not guaranteed: it can only be issued after medical treatment and once all criteria are met. Processing time, availability, delivery times and pickup depend on location and pharmacy.

Pharmacies in Munich: Where to Fill Your Prescription
If your local doctor has given you a paper prescription, you will need to find a pharmacy that can dispense it. This may take a little patience.
Not every pharmacy in Munich stocks medical cannabis or is willing to order it. There are various reasons for this: administrative work, the effort of storage and procurement, or simply the owner's cautious outlook.
Our tip: call ahead! Ask directly whether the pharmacy dispenses cannabis prescriptions and whether it stocks your prescribed strain or can order it. This saves unnecessary trips. Some larger pharmacies, often near medical centres, tend to be better equipped to help. A mail-order pharmacy with delivery* can also be an option; the pharmacy will confirm availability and delivery time.
Cannabis Social Clubs in Munich: Where Do Things Stand in 2026?
The new law also introduced Cannabis Social Clubs, known as cultivation associations. The idea: growing cannabis collectively on a non-commercial basis for members' personal use. Only people resident in Germany can become members, and you can only belong to one association. In Munich, the situation is complicated.
Bavaria applies the law in a particularly restrictive way. The requirements for setting one up are demanding, and finding suitable premises is difficult in a city with Munich's rents.
Things can change; check directly with the associations.
In Munich, Zazapass lists the 420-friendly lounge Greeners Munich, for which you do not need a pass, as well as 420 events with directions, see our locations page. A lounge and the medical route via ZazaXpress are two separate paths. This is no promise of sales or consumption on site; always check the house rules and the rules that apply.
Cannabis lounges in Munich
Zazapass lists a lounge in Munich:
You do not need a Zazapass for lounges in Germany. These are venues with their own house rules; you cannot buy cannabis there, and cultivation associations are not lounges. Each venue decides under its own rules and applicable law whether and on what terms to admit a visitor, and may refuse a visitor. Bring valid photo ID: depending on the venue you must be 18+ or 21+. You can find current listings on the lounges page.
FAQ: Your Questions About Medical Cannabis in Munich
Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
How Much Does Medical Cannabis Cost at a Pharmacy?
If you are paying out of pocket, you pay for the medication and the doctor's consultation yourself. Prices vary by strain, producer, pharmacy and platform; the pharmacy and the platform will tell you binding prices in advance. As mentioned, health insurance coverage is very much the exception and involves a lengthy application process.
Can I Use Medical Cannabis in Public?
This is legally delicate. No-consumption zones, such as areas within sight of schools, also apply to patients, and Bavaria interprets these rules very strictly. If in doubt, ask your doctor. Our advice for Munich: be discreet. A vaporiser is less conspicuous than a joint. Avoid large crowds and places where it would clearly be inappropriate. If the police stop you, show your prescription and ID, and stay calm and polite.
Do I Need a Special Medical Cannabis ID Card?
There is no official, government-issued "cannabis card". However, it is strongly recommended that you always carry a copy of your current prescription and a patient ID card. Many prescribing doctors and telemedicine platforms issue these cards. They summarise the essential information and can save a lot of stress during a police check by helping officers understand the situation more quickly.
Can I Drive While Taking Medical Cannabis?
This is a sensitive and legally complex issue. As a general rule, driving under the influence of cannabis is a criminal offence. As a patient, however, you are exempt if you are stable on your medication and show no signs of impairment. This means you must not drive when you have just started treatment, changed your dose or feel impaired in any way. The police can still require a drug test during a traffic stop. If THC is detected, you could face problems with your driving licence, even if you showed no signs of impairment. Only drive if you feel completely fit to do so, and be aware of the risk. Make sure you discuss this with your doctor.
Bottom Line for Munich
As you can see, Munich has its own particular challenges. Medical cannabis is not a way around the rules for recreational use. It requires medical treatment, and a prescription is never guaranteed. Stay informed and follow the rules that apply. For more tips on the city, see our Munich Guide.
*Applies only with a valid prescription. A prescription is not guaranteed: it can only be issued after medical treatment and once all criteria are met. Processing time, availability, delivery times and pickup depend on location and pharmacy.
