German cannabis law: what is allowed since the CanG

Since the Cannabisgesetz (CanG) came into force on 1 April 2024, adults in Germany may possess a limited amount of cannabis for personal use and grow a small number of plants at home. Supply happens through non-commercial cultivation associations (Anbauvereinigungen) that may pass cannabis to their own members — there are no commercial dispensaries, and selling cannabis outside that framework remains illegal.

Consumption is restricted by place and time: it is prohibited in the immediate vicinity of schools, playgrounds, youth facilities and sports grounds, and in pedestrian zones during daytime hours. Cultivation associations are also not allowed to let members consume on their premises.

That combination is why German cities have consumption lounges and 420-friendly gastronomy rather than shops: private venues where adults bring their own cannabis, plus a separate, regulated medical route for patients.

How consumption lounges work in Wiesbaden
